Yesterday I drove over to Edale in the High Peak with the dog and walked up to Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District at 636m above sea level. Fidget and I followed the start of the Pennine Way before veering off the route and up Crowden Clough, not the easiest trail to follow but in this very dry season it wasn’t too bad negotiating my way across the stream as the rocky path swaps from one side to the other at several points during this grade 1 scramble.

The heather is still in full colour on the hills leading to the Kinder Plateau and it was a perfect day, not too hot or windy in this exposed spot. After following the path along the plateau to the rock formations known as The Woolpacks we descended via Jacob’s Ladder. This was the first time I’d actually come down this steep laid path and found it quite challenging! Then it was back to the car in Edale via Barber Booth – altogether a rewarding 8 mile loop through some of the best walking in the country.

After such a yomp Fidget slept all the way home – wish I could have too, but someone had to drive!
