Just a short drive from The Old Station House is one of the most fascinating villages in England – Eyam, commonly referred to as The Plague Village. In 1665 this ordinary community, realising that the plague had come among them, sealed themselves off from the outside world for more than a year to contain the spread of the disease. Over half the villagers died, but they successfully prevented plague from spreading to other communities in the area. Today you can visit the delightful local museum where the entire story is explained and then explore the village where plaques on some of the oldest houses commemorate the residents who lost their lives during this horrible year.

In spite of this macabre history Eyam is a lovely village and Eyam Hall, built just a few years after the events of 1665 is a privately owned Stuart Manor House, open to the public on selected dates throughout the year. A walk up to Eyam Moor, passing the village stocks and Mompesson’s Well will reward you with stunning views across the Hope Valley.
