Easily one of the most awe-inspiring attractions in the Peak District the Heights of Abraham are not to be missed. Just 6 miles from The Old Station House, the adventure starts in Matlock Bath where you take a cable car across the Derwent Valley up to the summit of Masson Hill. Beware, this journey with the 360 degree views and sheer drop to the valley floor is not for the fainthearted, or those with a fear of heights. BUT it is jaw dropping and the reward is amazing. And for those who don’t fancy dangling in mid-air there is another way to get to the top – you can always walk!

Once safely at the top, after you’ve marvelled at the views some more, with your feet planted on solid ground you can take a tour of either (or both) Masson and Rutland Cavern, included in your ticket price. Then you can check out the exhibitions explaining the history of the place, the caverns and watch a film about the building of the cable cars. Then you can climb Prospect Tower for the most majestic views of the whole day – 1,000ft above sea level! After a fortifying cup of tea or lunch at the Vista Cafe why not amble through the 60 acre estate, check out the sculptures – and in 2026 there is also WOMBLE MANIA. I’m going – I haven’t seen Orinoco since we met on Wimbledon Common in 1976.
