Whether you love or hate Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice you have to agree that the cinematography around Derbyshire in the 2005 film adaptation of the book starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen was majestic. The scenes filmed at Chatsworth really did justice to the romance of it all – and that was before they cleaned up the outside of the house!

When Elizabeth stands on Stanage Edge there is no need for dialogue, the spectacular scenery of the Hope Valley speaks for itself.

When she joins her aunt and uncle in the busy dining hall at the Inn in fictional Lambton you get a glimpse of the very real fourteenth century Haddon Hall.

I watched that film in London where I was living and working at the time and within two years I was living and working in Rowsley, 2 miles from Haddon Hall, 3 miles from Chatsworth House and less than half an hour’s drive from Stanage Edge.

That is the power of the silver screen – and the Peak District. As the great novelist herself wrote of Derbyshire “There is not a finer county in England.”
